"What is Ubuntu?"
Linux Ubuntu can replace whatever Windows version you are now using. And do it better. And faster. With much better security. And it's free and open source.
Why you might want to try Ubuntu
- Almost all software in Linux is free and open source. This means you are free to
- Try any of thousands of applications and pay no fee.
- No trial versions.
- No bait and switches.
- Just try it and Love it or leave it.
- There are virtually no viruses in Linux. Really.
- Install it once. Install it a thousand times. It's always free.
- You can even sell it as long as you give proper credit.
What can it do for you?
With a few exceptions which I will detail later Linux Ubuntu can fully replace whatever applications you are using Windows for now.
- You can run Firefox or Google Chrome to surf the web
- Open-Office for office applications
- Gimp for image and photo editing
- Shotwell for photo managing and editing
- VLC media player for playing DVDs
- Rhythmbox to store and play music.
- You can even keep using whatever email and home page you are now using
- Or you can change to Evolution Email.
There is a learning curve involved in change. There always is. But the payoff is:
- You'll never again have to pay for a piece of software just to find out if it's right for you.
- You'll lose all the viruses that plague Windows based systems.
- There are thousand of apps to try for almost anything.
- There is an active community developing more and a large community of users to help you.
Why I switched to Ubuntu
- I came to Ubuntu two years ago as a disgruntled Windows XP user.
- I got frustrated with all the viruses, malware and security threats associated with Windows.
- I was really pissed at MS's little inbred virus, the "Microsoft Genuine Advantage."
- My Windows installation disk had decided I was no longer a valid Windows owner.
- Then I caught this virus called "Malware Defense".
- I couldn't wipe my drive and start over.
- I had threatened for years to switch to Linux.
So I did just that.
- I saved a few files, downloaded Ubuntu
- And through much trial and error adopted Ubuntu Linux and abandoned Windows
- Now I can freely reload my operating system anytime and wherever I want.
- Goodbye Bill. Goodbye Mr. Norton. So long Mcafee. See ya.
Why you might want to keep Windows
- First person shooter games - The popular games like WOW are difficult to adapt to Linux.
- Netflix watch instantly - Cannot be done in Linux. Hopefully this is about to change.
- Low tolerance for change - Lots of new programs to learn. Even a few glitches along the way.
- Hey, who am I to spoil the fun? It's a challenge.
- The reward is freedom from the MS stranglehold.
- And your friends will think you're a Geek.
